Survive Your First Semester Of College

Looking back over the last semester, it’s crazy how much I learned in a few short months. Not only in my classes, but just about college in general and how to be successful in such a competitive atmosphere. Here are 10 tips that will help all those new high school grads out there who might be feeling uneasy about heading off to school!

10. Study every. single. day.

tumblr_mhzcq9595H1rv8tvro1_500And study every subject every day. This seems intimidating, but the amount of information that you’ll be flying through in college is substantial. Cramming is simply stressful and ineffective. In high school, as long as you do your homework and look over the info before the test you’ll be okay, but not in college. Do you homework and also map out an hour or two a day for studying every subject on your own. You’ll feel on top of everything and not stressed!

9. Map out your time

HT2513_01-mac-101-ical_id-001-enI used iCal on my iPad and had a color coded plan for my week, every week. Each class was a different color and I put in the times I’d be in class, the times I’d study for each class, my workouts, my work schedule, my volunteer schedule, and social events too! Knowing that you’ve made time for everything allows you to focus on what you’re doing without thinking about all the other things you need to get done.

8. Make To-Do lists

to-do-listSitting down to study is ineffective unless you have a clear goal of what you want to accomplish during this study session. Do you need to re-read the chapter, do 20 practice problems, memorize the powerpoint slides? Write it down and cross it off when you finish it, you’ll feel so good getting to cross it off the list!

7. Set a timer when you study

timer1There are so many things to distract you from getting what you need to get done, done. I would put my phone in a drawer on “do not disturb” mode and set a timer for 1 hour. When the timer went off I’d take a 10 minute break to check texts, maybe see what’s up on twitter, ect. It was easier to focus in when I knew there was a break coming.

6. Find a new place to study every couple days

Belo_interiorThere are hundreds of tiny study spaces tucked away on campus and even more coffee shops and bookstores available for you to get your work done. Having a different place to go makes homework a little more exciting and keeps each day from seeming mundane.

5. Go to office hours with every question

tumblr_lr0l8oKOjv1qii6tmo1_500If you don’t know how to do something, don’t put it off until right before the test. Chances are you’ll need to know how to do it in order to understand the next things you’ll be learning in lecture. I would even go in if I got all the answers right but just wasn’t 100 percent sure why! Not only does this improve your understanding of the material, but it also shows your professor that you care and are working hard. They are willing to work with you and will sometimes give you tips you wouldn’t have known otherwise.

4. Learn from every test, figure out what you missed and why

tumblr_m3s1ybzcKz1qgblnaDid you miss the problem because you don’t understand that material? Go in to a tutor and figure it out so it doesn’t mess you up again on the final. However, a lot of the questions I missed on early tests weren’t because I didn’t know the material, but because I was so nervous that I wasn’t thinking clearly and made a silly mistake. You not only need to learn how to do the class, but also how to take the tests. Go slow, don’t be nervous, and skip problems you don’t know and come back to them. Once I stopped getting so nervous, my grades improved substantially.

3. Nourish your body to improve your mind

dep_1039002-Healthy-lifestyleLet’s face it, studying is about the last thing you want to do when you’re in a sugar coma, hungover, exhausted, or feeling crappy. Eating healthy foods, exercising, and getting enough sleep improve brain function and give you the energy you need to succeed in all your activities. Plus, a healthy lifestyle banishes a lot of stress from you life.

2. Don’t compare yourself to others

There will always be those people that the class comes easily to, and sometimes they just can’t help but share. Oh, you just cannot believe that people actually have to study for chemistry?

happyendingsshot_zps6734773aIt’s easy to look at people like that and feel stupid. You can get just as good of a score as them, so what if it takes more work for you? They are the exception, and everyone has talents. It doesn’t have anything to do with your chances for success.

1. Allow yourself to be a beginner

tumblr_mcz50qUpAw1qih393o1_500This one was the biggest realization for me. No matter how many AP classes you took in high school, college is a whole new ball game. Especially a rigorous university like UT. I had so much self doubt at the beginning of the semester because I felt completely out of my league and I didn’t know if I could hack it. When I did poorly on my first tests, I called my mom crying and told her I wasn’t sure if I could be a doctor because I did not think I was smart enough.

But then I decided that I wasn’t going to get “weeded out” by the classes that cause so many people to change their major. I buckled down, learned from my mistakes, worked hard, and ended up getting straight A’s!

Remember that everyone before you had to figure all of this out too. One test isn’t the end of the world. You’ll continue to make mistakes, you’ll continue to learn from them, and you’ll continue to grow as a person. Isn’t that the point of college in the first place? Have faith in yourself!!

I hope these tips help you in some small way!!

Pizza Salad

I was skyping my friend Kevin until about 1am last night, and then I read until 1:30 or 2, and yet I was wide awake before 8am! My internal clock is just hard wired to wake up early-ish and it cannot be shaken. I enjoyed my breakfast with the sunlight streaming in through my parents’ giant dining room window.

IMG_3550Waffles with a tablespoon of peanut butter and a banana. I debated skipping the peanut butter in lieu of maple syrup, but you just can’t beat that creamy deliciousness.

51220130929176True that. I saw an ad for 19 dollar white jeans at Old Navy and I knew I couldn’t miss it! I have a pair of white jeans but they are massive on me so they needed to be replaced. I ended up finding an entire outfit and only spent 39 dollars total! I just love Old Navy.

IMG_3554Once we were done shopping, my mom and I came home to grab lunch before heading out to enjoy the rest of our afternoon. I cut up a piece of the pizza from last night and put it on a bed of spinach. It was so good, and such an easy way to spruce up leftovers! On the side I enjoyed some carrots and hummus.

IMG_3556It wasn’t really that much food, so on our way out of the door I grabbed an apple. These apples taste like candy! I can’t believe how crisp and sweet they are. I’m obsessed.

IMG_3558It was 95 degrees today so, iced decaf americanos in hand, my mom and I enjoyed our books on the outdoor deck of Starbucks. After a while the hard chairs got a little uncomfortable so we moved inside. Something about reading at a coffee shop is just such a satisfying way to spend an afternoon!

IMG_3559I’m reading a book called Defending Jacob, about a father who’s son is accused of murder. It’s a page turner and extremely well written. I highly suggest it! I continued reading when we got home, and enjoyed a square of dark chocolate and a bowl of cereal a few hours later.

IMG_3562 IMG_3563My dad arrived home a little after 2pm and spent a long time on the phone. The options for my parents keep expanding and changing and I’m so excited for them! What a crazy year this has been, I can’t even tell you. When our stomachs started grumbling for dinner, Chipotle sounded fantastic. My mom and I split a barbacoa burrito and it sure hit the spot.

IMG_3565I’ve been eating more and more vegetarian lately, and sometimes I think I want to go vegetarian altogether. But sometimes you just cannot beat a burger or some tasty meat in your burrito, so I’m not sure I ever will! Especially if I only eat organic meat.

Have you ever considered going vegetarian?

Fresh Summer Haircut

Last night Alice had the biggest case on me that I’ve ever seen!

IMG_3535She wiggled under my knee and lay there for a long time while I read a magazine. Then she woke up in the middle of the night to come sleep with me to make sure I was still home! I think she’s getting nervous because I’m usually only here a night or two.

Once I woke up I had one thing on my mind: pancakes. Banana chocolate chip pancakes to be precise.

IMG_3537The bananas disintegrate into the batter and provide an incredible texture and natural sweetness. When you use whole wheat batter and only add a small amount of chocolate, this is actually a very nutritious breakfast! And soooo tasty.

Once my belly was full I headed out for a run on the trails in my parent’s neighborhood. It wasn’t too hot yet and the sun wasn’t out so it was perfect. My legs really needed to get moving again, stretching after my run felt like heaven!

IMG_3539I used my “run Keeper” app and ran 1.5 miles down the trail, then turned around and ran back and walked the .2 miles back to my parents’ house as a cool down. I was schweaty!

After showering and getting ready, I joined my mom on her daily walk with Alice. For some reason walking hurts my stomach 20000x more than running so I’ve had to ice it most of the day. Tomorrow, just running! When I got home my stomach was grumbling so I whipped up lunch.

IMG_3541On the menu was a whole wheat bagel topped with cream cheese, spinach, and tomato. I ate an apple once I finished my sandwich for a sort of “lunch dessert”, if you will.

I’ve needed a haircut really badly for the past month or so, it had just gotten SO heavy and the ends were starting to become excessively dry. My mom found a place called Silverado Hair Salon about 2 miles from the house, so I called and made an appointment. I couldn’t be happier with how my hair turned out!

IMG_3542I got a bunch of layers, super thinned out, and a couple inches off the bottom. You should have seen the amount of hair she thinned out!! My hair feels incredibly soft and healthy again and I can put it in a ponytail without getting a headache 2 minutes later. Heaven!

I filled the afternoon with random activities and leisure. I was feeling really snacky, so I had half an orange, a handful of raisin bran, and a tablespoon of peanut butter throughout the day. Delicious!

For dinner, my mom and I ordered Dominoes! I haven’t had delivery pizza in months and it tasted incredible! Plus, Dominoes has a new nutrition calculator on their website which is so handy.

Screen Shot 2013-05-16 at 6.27.40 PMWe got a medium pizza with light cheese, green bell pepper, and roasted red pepper. It arrived in only 20 minutes and we dug in!

IMG_3545Sometimes you just cannot beat cheap pizza. I got an email from St. Pat’s hospital in Missoula about the steps I need to take to get on their volunteer team there and I can’t wait to get going! Have an awesome night :D

Do you like pizza? Where’s your favorite place to have it delivered from? What are your favorite toppings?

Yoga Dog

Early this morning I was woken up by the loudest thunder I have ever heard in my life! The lightning came through my window and lit up my entire bedroom, followed by cracks of thunder that practically shook the house!

tumblr_m5y7apLjOC1rqfhi2o1_250My dad had a flight this morning so the lightning made me kind of nervous, but luckily the storm was wrapping up before he left and he made it safe and sound. Phew!

I had a pretty thrilling afternoon of walking the dog, sleeping, reading, and watching TV. I took about a 3 hour nap to kill off a headache I woke up with. It’s slowly going away but it’s hanging on for dear life! Annoying! This afternoon when my mom got home, Alice helped her get some yoga in.

IMG_3525 IMG_3523 IMG_3532When we took her on her walk, our neighbor called out “Hey Alice!”, and we met a Russian couple who wanted to pet her and ask us all about Dobermans. Wherever Alice goes, she is famous. Probably because she’s such a goon.

Modern family on tonight!! Tomorrow I’m getting a haircut and hopefully can workout. I can’t wait to get back to it!!

Food

World’s Best Salsa

I am in the BEST mood right now because I got an A on my chemistry and history finals! Still waiting to hear back about biology…but dang, the feeling of hard work paying off cannot be beat. My giant breakfast was a contributor to my success this morning, I’m just sure of it. :D

IMG_3504Scrambled eggs and banana pancakes. Delicious!! Once I finished my test I came home and enjoyed an apple cider I’ve had in the fridge for weeks, along with some peas and meatballs. Random lunch but it did the job.

IMG_3509

It’s so weird to be done with school! This afternoon I had no clue what to do with myself. I didn’t have to study, do homework, go to work, or be anywhere! Most of my friends have headed out of town so I spent some time doing random chores, applying for volunteer positions in Missoula, and twiddling my thumbs.

tumblr_ma88rdiVL01ry937io1_500In elementary and middle school and the first few years of high school, the workload gradually decreases as you get closer and closer to summer. The anticipation builds as each day seems more like summer, and by the time it finally arrives you explode into freedom as a giant ball of excitedness and happiness.

But then senior year and in college…something changes. Professors begin to bury you in tests and projects, smothering out any vision of summer with computer screens and dark study rooms. You are suddenly thrust into summer, blinking in the sun, with no clue how to spend your suddenly free hours.

One thing you can do, however, is eat incredible salsa! I went to my parents’s for dinner and my mom whipped up one of my favorite meals ever.

IMG_3514Black bean, corn, and avocado salad! This stuff is like crack. Tostitos has also created the most incredible chips on the planet, and when paired together…I can’t even.

IMG_3515 IMG_3516This recipe is 100 percent healthy and easy. Go make it. Now.

Textures_wallpapers_150Serves 16 or….1. No judging here!!

Do you like salsa? What is your favorite summer food?

Come For Dinner, Stay For 3 Nights

You guessed it…I stayed at my parents’ house again last night! We watched the movie Safe Haven and I loved it! I thought it was going to be cheesy and predictable, but it actually had some great twists and the acting wasn’t cliche at all. Score.

SAFE HAVENWhy can’t I look good in short hair?? Why??

Alice was extra snuggly this morning which was fine by me! I sat on the couch and she laid down in my lap and hung out with me for quite a while! She followed me all around the house and was just extra interested in everything I was doing. She’s so funny.

IMG_3492In the past few days, I’ve re-taken all of my chemistry tests and done over 100 practice problems to prepare for the final. That’s more than 200 problems! Let’s hope I can remember everything I re-learned for my test tomorrow. I’m feeling prepared which is half the battle sometimes.

IMG_3497My test is tomorrow at 9am and then I’m free! Yay! Tonight I plan to watch an episode of Breaking Bad, read for a while, and go to bed early. I need to be rested up!

Food

PicMonkey CollageBreakfast: Go Lean Crunch. Lunch: Scrambled eggs and peppers on an English Muffin and some pineapple. Snacks: orange and an apple. Dinner: Tuna salad on a bagel thin, carrots and hummus, and broccoli.

How To Eat Out Healthfully

I have to begin this post with a huge shout out to my incredible mother on mother’s day! I’m so blessed to have such a close-knit family that shares so much love for one another. My mom is always there for me and she dusts me off when life has knocked me down and is my support system when I’m doing well! Thanks for everything Mom!!

IMG_3488We grabbed some Amy’s ice cream as a snack today and the amount of young families waiting in line was crazy! If you want to see what pure joy looks like, visit an ice cream shop full of toddlers. Seriously.

As we were walking past restaurant after restaurant I realized how many great places there are to eat in Austin! I can see why people gain weight when they come to cities like this, but there are some steps you can take to ensure that eating out often doesn’t add inches to your waistline!

1. Have them deliver a to-go box the same time they serve your meal.

61-to-go-box-catherine-buchananThe portions at most restaurants are crazy big, and it is so easy to keep picking at your plate even when you’re full. If you immediately put half your meal into the box for later, you can enjoy what’s on your plate and not be tempted to overindulge!

2. Avoid anything ‘crispy’.

crispy chicken caesar salad 2Crispy= fried, and deep-fat frying adds a boatload of fat and calories to any food. Choose the grilled option instead.

3. If you order a salad, ask for the dressing on the side.

French Salad DressingDressing is delicious, but it’s very high in fat and calories. A little is delicious and good for you, but restaurants tend to drench their salads and the calorie count shoots up into the 700-1000 range. If you dress your own salad, you can use a tablespoon or two and not turn a healthy meal into an indulgence!

4. Ask for light cheese.

pza_tuscan_cheeseThis is along the same lines as the salad dressing thing. Cheese is awesome, but it’s more of a flavoring than a main course and restaurants tend to pile it on. Half the amount is usually plenty and it’ll save you a ton of calories.

5. Take it easy on the bread basket

breadThis one is the hardest one for me. I LOVE bread. I crave bread more than I do sweet things, and when somebody sets a bowl of fresh, hot, buttery rolls in front of me I always want to dive right in. But filling up on rolls and then eating a meal is just way too much food. I sip water and tear my roll into pieces, eating it slowly. Or if you’re really tempted, just ask them to take it away!

There are so many amazing restaurants to try! Get out there and enjoy them and maintain your healthy lifestyle as well, it’s totally possible. :D

Food and Exercise

PicMonkey CollageBreakfast: French toast. Lunch: Noosa Yogurt. Snack: Amy’s ice cream. Dinner: tuna sandwich and broccli.

I’m taking a week off from working out, so if you’re wondering why I haven’t been posting my workouts that’s why!
